Episode Transcript
Speaker 1 00:00:04 Welcome back to Thaws, progressive Bluegrass. How's everybody doing? So glad to have you back. It's been a little bit, I originally intended to have today's episode featuring the 2026 IBMA International Bluegrass Music Association. Ramble. It's a two day, two night extravaganza of Bluegrass Band, 31 Bluegrass pants. To be specific, there's a lot. So this was gonna be part of season five, but I've been up to a few things, haven't been able to get a full blown season five completed. There's been a lot going on. Chicago Cubs broke my heart. I'm sure very few of you care. And the ones that do care already know this. It was a distraction and an excuse. Got my first set of stickers. Check that out.
Speaker 1 00:01:05 They looked a lot bigger on the computer screen. They're about the size of a nickel, not what I was expecting. What? But hey, here we are. So the big more important thing that I've been working on, my friend Todd l. Brink friend of the show, he was featured in Season one, built me an amazing website, thaw progressive bluegrass.com. Go check it out. It's the coolest bluegrass website I've ever encountered. I'm not gonna say it's the coolest bluegrass website ever, 'cause I'm sure there's plenty out there that I've never been to, but it's the coolest I've ever been part of or interacted with, or even come across. Headline feature. My videos haven't been quite the focus they used to be. Prior to the podcast, I, I was fully focused on taking amazing bluegrass videos. Now I still do, but it's gotta be something unique and special, something you haven't seen before.
Speaker 1 00:02:09 So podcast Top Focus, but coolest thing, we've got the featured on the headline@thawsprogressivebluegrass.com is the most recent video that I've taken. If it's less than a week old, after a week, it'll disappear if I don't update to a new video. But today's featured video, every 24 hours, there's a new video, a random video from my collection of over 3,150 videos. At the time of this recording, you'll never see a repeat. And for those of you that have a YouTube channel, such as myself, you may not know, YouTube organizes their videos for the creators from newest to oldest. It's really hard to jump back more than 500 videos because it's in linear. Unless you have the exact title to search the title, you can search T Shaw's, you know, high Cold Wind, whatever. You can narrow it down. But odds are, when you have as many videos as I have, you're never gonna see the older videos ever again.
Speaker 1 00:03:18 It could be an outrageously good video, something super duper cool, but I would never come across it again. So my website has allowed me to rediscover my own video collection, and some of 'em are so much fun from 10, 12 or more years ago, some really unique stuff. Just the other day, there was Billy Strings and CJ Kane, who at the time was with the, whoops, I can't remember who he's playing with now, but they were doing a guitar workshop at Romp in 2017, and I think he's wearing his pajamas. He, I don't think he was planning on it, but you could hear a conversation with me and the guy next to me about Billy's Thompson guitar. It was the Mahogany Thompson guitar. And I was saying, yeah, you know, Preston Thompson made the guitar. You should go talk to him after the workshop. He'd be happy to tell you about it.
Speaker 1 00:04:13 Just, you know, H came back to the days when Billy was just another normal bluegrass musician. You could go talk to him after the set. Never would've watched that video. So anyway, check out thaws aggressive bluegrass.com. Come back every day, see a new video every day. It's a lot of fun. But the biggest primary focus now is the podcast. And of course, Shaw's Progressive Bluegrass podcast is, all the episodes are there complete with album art. And every artist that I have on Shaw's, progressive Bluegrass gets their own dedicated page. Kind of like liner notes of an album. You sit down to listen to a vinyl, you have tendency to look at the liner notes, check it out. Well, my website's set up the same way. Listen to a podcast. Pull up the artist's page, read some p pertinent information to that artist, albums they've produced, perhaps where they're at, bands they've played with.
Speaker 1 00:05:11 Just check it out. Read along when you're listening to the show. Of course, I'm, when episodes are out and seasons, I release one every week. But today, as I mentioned, our primary focus is going to be on the IBMA Bluegrass Ramble. I essentially took a 30 to two minute YouTube video, reconnaissance research, whatever you wanna call it, of every single band playing at IBM's Bluegrass Ramble. It's Tuesday, October 20th, and Wednesday, October 21st. Starts at a little after five o'clock in the evening and goes into about, looks like 11 o'clock is the latest act. I watched every single one of these bands on YouTube between 30 seconds and five minutes if I really liked them, kept going. So it's not a judgment, it's not a critique, it's not a review. It was just my first impression. And probably on average, 90 seconds of a band, I would try and catch a couple songs when appropriate.
Speaker 1 00:06:22 You know, two, three, 'cause I know every song's a little bit different. So most of these bands I have not been familiar with before. It's one of the joys of IBMA. The Ramble itself is such a wonderful place to discover bluegrass. We've got 31 bands playing. All of them play twice except for Ralph Stanley. So there's basically two ways to ramble. You have the stages located at the Convention center. The Riverview stage and the McKinsey stage are both located at the convention center. And then you have another five venues all along the Main Street corridor. Hi-Fi, Clydes Songbirds, Stratus Rooftop at the caption, hotel Barrel House, ballroom feed table, and taverns. And so you're gonna get 2D types of experiences. Almost every band, I believe, except Ralph Stanley, every band not only plays two sets. I believe there are seven bands that, although they have duplicate sets that are on the same night.
Speaker 1 00:07:30 But all but seven bands, perhaps Ralph Stanley II play both Tuesday and then again Wednesday with a handful of bands only playing Tuesday, I believe it's Pickers Anonymous. Seth Mulder, midnight Run for Randa and Pitney Meyer, I believe only play Tuesday, but do multiple sets. And then on Wednesday, I believe Water Tower John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project Stillhouse Chunkies only play Wednesday night, as well as Ralph Stanley the second and the Clinch Mountain Boys only play Wednesday night. The single set they do one night on Main Street and one night at the convention center. Two completely different musical experiences. The convention center, you're gonna be sitting down, you probably won't have stage lights if you do, there'll be minimal stage lights. You're gonna be paying attention to the music itself. It's not a party. It's a showcase opportunity for these bands to play at the Ramble. Or you do the Main Street corridor and that's where you're going out.
Speaker 1 00:08:32 Barrel House Ballroom is a music venue, feed table, and Tavern, my absolute favorite restaurant. The food there is phenomenal. There's something for everybody. It's Americana food, reasonably priced, great drink options as well. A ton of great local microbrews on tap. A huge selection of beer. But the food is fantastic. It's actually my favorite place in town to get salmon. If you order it medium rare, it'll come out medium rare with this wonderful remade sauce and their maple glazed bacon. Brussel sprouts, oh oh, but right across the street, Hi-Fi Clydes. It's also Bar Restaurant with a stage. Another wonderful option to get food. Great spot to eat and catch some music. Of course, bear House Ballroom is a music venue, I believe it's about a 500 person capacity music venue. You're gonna get the full stage lights sound, mostly standing on concrete. There are limited seating options kind of on the outskirts depending on how they have it set up.
Speaker 1 00:09:35 Sometimes they have some seats too with Ramble. They'll probably have some seats as well. Folding chair type seats. So full music experience. It is connected to Five Ways Brewing, which is a wonderful local microbrew. They also have terrific food. That is a good food spot as well. However, in the restaurant area, you probably won't see. You definitely won't see the stage. You might hear the stage, but it'll be muffled at best. So plan to eat before or after the music. You intend to see if that is the choice you go to. I forgot to mention Songbirds. Songbirds is a dedicated music venue. I'm gonna guess two 50 capacity, maybe only 200 standing. Usually a standing room. There are some bar tables and seating for the Ram. I bet they're gonna have some bar tables and seating. Heck, they might even have half the venue seated.
Speaker 1 00:10:30 Ramble's a unique experience, but cool music venue. Dedicated music venue also has a lot of guitars and other music paraphernalia on display. So if you have a few extra minutes, check out some of the display cases, some cool stuff. Alright, so this being all said, main Street Corridor going out, music going out, convention Center, sit down, shut up. Enjoy the music. Totally different dynamic. Choose your own adventure. This all being said, going back to my website, thaws progressive bluegrass.com. Every single band, I have an interactive schedule for the Ramble on Thaws, progressive bluegrass. Select the bands you want. It will automatically tell you if there's a conflict and when the alternative is to see that band. If you have a conflict, make your own schedule. It has directions to the venues on Main Street or the Convention Center also has links to the websites for each venue.
Speaker 1 00:11:29 If they have food, there'll be the menu online, which ones serve alcohol, what your options are. Everything you need to know. But the cool thing you select the concert you want or the bands you want to see. It'll tell you when there's conflicts and alternatives. It will then allow you to customize it. Say you want to meet Trevor for dinner at seven o'clock at the feed before a band you're about to see. You can manually input your own custom events as well. Once again, showing if there's a conflict, what the distance or time is to get from venue to the convention center. Electric shuttle, information free Electric Shuttle, and Chattanooga, where the stops are located, or MAP program. If you want to walk. Oh oh one last thing, thaws progressive bluegrass.com on the schedule tool. Once you've selected your schedule, once you've inputted your custom events, once you've decided this is what I'm gonna do, where, when, how you can email it to yourself.
Speaker 1 00:12:34 You can download it and add it to your phone's calendar, Android or iPhone both work flawlessly. It's fantastic. Use it. Have fun. Now the IBMA is also releasing their own app. And by the time you're listening to this, the IBMA app is out. Now the IBMA app is gonna cover the schedule for everything, not just the Ramble. It's gonna have the festival at the end, the ramble, the trade show workshops. Everything's gonna be on that app. They may have a scheduling tool that works just as well. I don't know it at the time of the recording. It wasn't out yet. Not trying to steal their thunder. That's where you go to buy the tickets. That's where you go for any changes. My schedule at this point will be outdated potentially. So IBMA apps direct is gonna keep you the most current. But my scheduling tool is super cool.
Speaker 1 00:13:31 Anything I could possibly think of to help make your ramble experience better, it's there. There's also a link to the IBMA website where you can purchase tickets. One of the greatest things about the Ramble is how affordable it is. It's a little over 30. I wanna say it's $33 in change for an individual ticket. Or you could buy a ticket for both nights for about $59 in change. I could be a few cents off, I apologize, but what a great way to experience a huge amount of music for a very small investment. If you want to see all 31 bands at $60, I mean, you're talking just under $2 a show. $2 per band.
Speaker 1 00:14:24 Come check out the IBMA Bluegrass Ramble. So, all right, we're gonna get into the bands. That's why you're all tuning in. Sorry it's been so long. There's a lot to talk about. Starting at the Convention Center on Tuesday, the Riverview stage from five 40 to six 10. We have the Weary, weary Ramblers duet, fiddle, guitar harmonica, bluesy folk music, fiddle, guitar harmonica, 60 seconds. That's what I gathered. So moving forward with six 20 to six 50, Dave Atkins and Mountain Soul. It's a five piece traditional grass band, traditional Bluegrass five piece. Got the bass covered. It's exactly what I would expect from seven to seven 30. We're still at the River view stage at the Convention Center, Nick Dumas and Branch Line. It's a five or six piece traditional bluegrass band. What I discovered, it depends where they were if it was five or six pieces.
Speaker 1 00:15:24 So I don't know what to expect at the Ramble. Their guitar player was Daniel Thrill Kill. I've known Daniel for several years. I came across Daniel the first time when he was playing with Circus number nine, one of the greatest bands ever. It's such a shame they're not still together. Different story, different day. But I'm excited to see them. Good traditional bluegrass and the talent that I saw in a short amount of time on YouTube definitely seems to be that they are worth watching. From seven 40 to eight 40, we've got Williamson Branch. It's a family bluegrass band lead. Female vocalists or vocalists. Younger, probably early teens, but the whole family appears to be represented. Could be off, but family traditional bluegrass after that at eight 20 to eight 50. The slogan Ramblers. I love the slogan ramblers. I've seen 'em before. However, there's been a change since I've seen them.
Speaker 1 00:16:23 Frank Evans on Banjo, a phenomenal banjo player. He is currently his full-time gig. Musicians have so many gigs, especially in bluegrass. But his full-time gig is, or his primary gig is he tours with Bronwyn, formerly Bronwyn, Keith Hines, Bronwyn's Band. He plays banjo for on this, on her show stage. But he also has a solo album out, really good solo album. I don't wanna get too diluted here. I'm excited to see the slogan Ramblers. They are my favorite spins on Apple music, or when I'm just randomly listening to music. They are probably my top 10, but I've never seen him without Frank. Don't know if Frank's been replaced. Don't know if they went on without him. I assume he's been replaced 'cause they would be a four piece band or they'd be a trio without the banjo. We're gonna find out. But I'm excited to see him.
Speaker 1 00:17:18 Everything I've heard really, really, really enjoyed. Okay, so that's Logan Ramblers. From nine to nine 30 we have Tony Camel and Kim Warner. This is a duo, banjo and mandolin. I saw Kim Warner years ago. This is off memory. I know he substituted. If I get the band wrong, I apologize. But I'm 90% certain he substituted for Jeff Austin in Yonder Mountain String Band when Jeff's wife was having their first child. Give or take the details, but I know he substituted. I believe it was for Jeff Austin. So if you're playing mandolin for Jeff Austin in their prime, probably really good. In addition, Nick George, my chief consulting officer friend of the show, he is very familiar with Tony Camel. Hope it's Camel, K-A-M-E-L. Said, very, very talented banjo player. He's looking forward to seeing him. So there we go. From nine 40 to 10 10, Nick Chandler and delivered hard driving trad grass and they're wearing suits.
Speaker 1 00:18:27 Kind of like the Bill Monroe look of the day. I respect that. If you're gonna get your giddy up on, and I enjoy the fast Ask Grass. This is the traditional fast ass bluegrass, at least what I gather. Hard drive and fun. Should be a great way to finish the night on the Riverview stage at the convention center. All right, moving on. We're still at the convention center. It's Tuesday night, October 20th. Now we're gonna discuss the McKinsey Stage. Veranda Veranda from five 50 to six 20. She or her band was the International IBMA International Band Performance Grant recipient. The IBMA provide an international band each year, a grant for the next following year to help us subsidize the expenses of touring in the United States. So they're not from this country, which therefore you may never get a chance to see him again. Highly recommend do what I saw was a female vocalist or or lead vocalist, power vocalist, very powerful voice.
Speaker 1 00:19:39 Also bilingual. Found a video of her singing in a different language, but you may never get to see 'em again. Powerful, great vocals, definitely we're checking out, especially one of the great attractions of IBMA is you do get international bands as well. Moving on, six 30 to seven o'clock, we got Seth Mulder and Midnight Run. My first run through first 30 seconds or so I heard of them. They immediately sounded similar to Balsam Range to me. The second video I clicked on, didn't get that vibe as much, but good traditional bluegrass. Enjoy it. Seven 10 to seven 40, the Amanda Cook Band Grass. Amanda's voice reminded me initially of Maddie Denton. My first, listen, Amanda to the lead singer. Second, not as much, but anyway. Tri Grass, 30 seconds, 60 seconds. Don't have much more to say. So 8 39 o'clock, crying Uncle Bluegrass band, young, talented picker, some excellent covers, some excellent original material.
Speaker 1 00:20:43 A four piece. I wouldn't be surprised if if these were a former international band grant recipient as well. But Ted Quail on mandolin, IF the mandolin player. I found a video of him in 2017 on the IBMA Youth stage set. So he was really impressive as a youth in 2017. The whole band seemed very talented. Definitely worth checking out if your schedules align from nine 10 to nine 40. We've got Missy Rains and Allegheny. This is a seasoned foundational bass player of bluegrass in today's scene. She's a Nashville cat. She's respected by everyone. She's got great vocals, bass player lead, bass player, traditional, yet unique, and I'd almost put her into Bluegrass royalty. So gotta go from nine 50 to 10 20. Pitney Meyer, it's five piece vocal focused. They've played the world famous Station Inn and the Ryman. They used to have Ginny Lenore on Fiddle, who is now lead for Wood Box heroes.
Speaker 1 00:21:59 These guys seem, from the videos I was looking at, they've played the Grand Ole Opry, they've played the Ryman, they've played the World famous station in. They seem bigger than I would typically expect on the ramble. So they're a headliner of the ramble, so to speak. But I'm intrigued just based on their resume and where they've played at this point. From 10 30 to 11 o'clock, the Wood Box heroes, Jenny Flora, who I was just speaking of with Pitney Meyer is the lead. But this is a super group. They've put together a Nashville Super group and kind of a behind the scenes Nashville supergroup. It's gonna be my first time seeing him, but Matt Menifee played banjo with Mumford, his sons and Cadillac Sky. Remember them and Warren Haynes. So you gotta be good if you're playing with Warren Haynes. Barry Bales is on base.
Speaker 1 00:22:53 He's played with Allison Krause. Once again, she's not gonna hire a schlub. Jenny Lenore on Fiddle and Vocals. Josh Martin on guitar and vocals, and of course friend of the show, Thomas Castle. I've got a couple episodes of him on Thaws, progressive Bluegrass that you can see on my website. Thaws progressive bluegrass.com on mandolin. I'm stoked to see these guys. I can't believe I haven't seen them yet. Everything I've seen on YouTube I've enjoyed. That's gonna be a personal highlight for me. Okay, now we're gonna cover all the venues located off of Main Street, but before we do, we're gonna take a brief pause for a message from our sponsor.

Alright, now we're gonna move on to the Barrel House Ballroom stage on Tuesday from six to six 30. The Lich Brothers, the Lich Brothers, won the Telluride Band contest this past year. For those of you that have been listening to the show, I went to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival for the first time this past June. I was there to support Randy Steele in the high cold wind local band, amazing band. Randy's also been on the show several times. I was a little heartbroken. The Lich Brothers won by one point. Prove me wrong, they won by one point over Randy Steel in the high cold wind. Second snot shabby at the Telluride Band contest.
Speaker 1 00:25:36 But I'm excited to see the Lich Brothers, despite them winning the Telluride Band contest. But they did win the Telluride Band contest. So gotta check out the Lich Brothers. Six to six 30 at Barrelhouse Ballroom from six 50 to seven 30. The Price Sisters five piece two Sisters, five piece band, two sisters share mandolin and fiddle, and they share the vocals. Single mic. They were at Del Fest recently. Little slower than my typical tastes. Big focus on vocals and a little bit slower. Some people really appreciate that. From seven 50 to eight 30, we've got Thunder and Rain. First Vin was a Guns N Roses Sweet Child, the mine cover, and it turns out I think that wasn't them. So there might be two Thunder and Rains kicking around there. So just be aware if you're doing your own research. But three female leads, guitar, fiddle, and banjo.
Speaker 1 00:26:35 They had Andy Brown on bass who actually plays the Greenwood Rye. One of my favorite bands. Three female bluegrass musicians. Seemed very talented in the short amount of time. I looked at 'em from eight 50 to nine 30. The Clever Lees. The Clevers. Clever Lees. How about the Clever Lees fun outfits? They got the giddy up great hats. They immediately appear very traditional. Don't judge a book by its cover. I mean this Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys are coming out to play is your first impression if you look at them. But the very first song I played, they were covering in bluegrass style. A Bengal song walked like an Egyptian, not traditional bluegrass. They also did a four non blondes cover. They did a Is it? Yes, owner of A Lonely Heart Cover, but with Jimmy Martin's Sunday Best Outfits, what a Party Barrel House Ballroom's gonna be a great place to see them. Closing out Barrel House Ballroom from eight 50 to nine 30. That's a party set.
Speaker 1 00:27:51 That's a party set for sure. Okay, moving on from there. Hi-Fi Cides mentioned High-Fi. Clyde's has great food and you are, the dining room and the stage are in the same room. So you could absolutely plan to try and get some food here when you're seeing a band, unless you want to see the band, you won't probably see the band well from your table. I don't know. See for yourself. From six 20 to seven o'clock pickers anonymous. This is a duplicate. Seven 20 to eight o'clock. They played earlier in the evening. I already covered them. Tone Wood String Band. First song I picked up from them was a train song. So that immediately grabbed my attention. And then the second video was a midnight moonlight cover. They did a very worthy job of it. Big fan of Peter Rowan, big fan of Midnight Moonlight. Fun bluegrass.
Speaker 1 00:28:41 Couple of the tracks I looked at did have brushes. Brushes on a beatbox. Not all the songs feature that. So Light percussion. Light percussion. Then we've got a duplicate. Seth Molder, midnight Run. Not Gonna Take your Time with Duplicates. Moving on to Songbirds New Grassland. Now a couple things about New Grassland that grab my attention. First and foremost, they use all caps in their English version of their band name. They are from Shanghai, China. I didn't know bluegrass was a thing in China. It's huge. So I'm glad that it is and it makes perfect sense now that I think about it. But International Band, Shanghai, China, all caps in their name, they sing Angelina Bakker, which almost nobody sings. It's an instrumental 90% of the time, but they actually sing. It's kind of fun lyrics too. If you ever listen to the lyrics, Evangeline the Bakker, but I'm gonna check them out.
Speaker 1 00:29:48 I'm intrigued. Probably band. I will never get a chance to see again. 7 30, 8 o'clock, 8 30, 7 30 to eight 30 an hour set at Songbirds. Wood Belly String Band grabbed me in the first 30 seconds with a song titled Brother. It's a four piece Mando Banjo guitar, bass, and bonus points for me. They're playing with a Martin guitar, at least they were in the video I watched. Got a soft spot for Martins, jumped to the second song. Musty Band. Really enjoyed them at least based on my notes. From eight 30 to nine 10. Veranda Duplicate, we talked about that earlier. Okay, Stratus Rooftop stage at the Caption Hotel. It's across the street from Barrel House Ballroom and Five Wits. Been to the rooftop of the caption. Don't know if the stage is inside outside, how it's situated. Haven't been there for music. But Christy Cox is from Australia. She is starting off the Stratus stage at six 40 to seven 20. Australian singer songwriter. Very strong female vocals. I could be way off. My first impression sounded similar to Alison Krause is what at least immediately jumped in my mind in 60 seconds of viewing. But strong, powerful female vocals from Australia.
Speaker 1 00:31:10 Don't get that many opportunities. Seven 40 to eight 20 Lonesome a string band. First track was very peppy, but they were playing claw hammer banjo. So my apologies, I don't know old time all that well. But I would call them O Time. First impression, maybe Jazzy Grass. Two minutes. Not enough to really tell eight 40 to nine 20. Country Gong bang. They are from South Korea. I have seen Country Gong Bang. They were the international, the I bmas International Band Grant recipients last year. So I've seen them a couple of times. They do some traditional covers. Their guitar player is a Tony Rice clone. Really, really, really good. Tony Rice clone guitar player. But they also have some original material in Korean, but they also do sing in English. So you get a nice cultural experience with them. Very talented players. Last I heard they were having visa issues. Can't promise they're gonna make it. Hopefully it's been corrected, but can't make a plan to buy airfare and whatnot until your visa clears.
Speaker 1 00:32:33 All right, now we're gonna hit the feed table and tavern stage the feed. As I mentioned at the beginning of this podcast, one of my favorite restaurants in Chattanooga. Great place to grab food. I've never been to their event space. I've never been in their room. It's a backroom, I assume. I don't know what to expect stage wise. I'm certain you can't eat food in the event room. You've gotta eat food at the bar or the restaurant part. I'm certain of it, but highly recommend you get some food when you're at the feed. They start with Rock Hearts. This is classic Country Grass. The second song I hit, whispering Waters, eh, I kind of heard the vintage Ralph Stanley, nasally hum. You know that nasal sound in the vocals. But classic, classic country grass is how I would describe them in 60 seconds. Seven 50 to eight 30. Pitney Myers. It's duplicate from earlier. Eight 50 to nine 30. Rick Ferris Band. This is classic country bluegrass.
Speaker 1 00:33:38 That wraps up Tuesday. So we've made it through night one and now we're gonna cover Wednesday, October 21st. This is gonna go a lot faster because any of the bands duplicated, we're not gonna talk about. I'm not gonna recover every single band at every single stage. Go to ibm.org to look at their schedule or go to Thaws, progressive Bluegrass to look at my schedule or your schedule on my page. Lemme make that very clear. It's your schedule, your ramble. Majority of the bands that duplicated play one night on Main Street and one night in the convention center. Kind of pick what your fit is, especially if you're doing both nights and you really should do both nights really should it's, it's the best thing ever entertainment wise. Bang for the buck. Do both nights. But we're gonna talk about a band that is fresh for Wednesday.
Speaker 1 00:34:38 A couple of them. We will start with the Riverview stage playing for the first time, five 40 to six 10 Riverview stage at the Convention Center. John Hartford fiddle tune project. This ist of mature women, mandolin, fiddle guitar, terrific harmonies. I would describe them as perfect breakfast grass for those of you you know. You know this is Breakfast grass. And of course John Hartford's songs are all amazing. They do a really good job in the short amount of time. I listened. So John Hartford, Phil Tune project. See, duplicate, duplicate, duplicate, duplicate, duplicate, duplicate. Alright, moving on to the McKinsey stage for the first time at the I-I-B-M-A Bluegrass Ramble. On Wednesday the 21st, we have five 50 to six 20. A friend of mine, Prentice, who I've known for years and in the last four or five years or so, has gotten into banjo and become a bluegrass.
Speaker 1 00:35:31 He was always a dabbler, but he told me about a band named Water Tower. This was just three four, probably June, may. He probably told me in May of Water Tower for the first time. So that's the first time I heard of them doing research for this project. This podcast was the first time I actually listened to them. My initial guess was this was Colorado Grass. Turns out I was wrong. It's Los Angeles Punk grass. That's how they describe themselves as punk bluegrass, super fast guitar licks, banjo, mandolin, guitar bass, American Bluegrass Punk band. First three clips I listened to. I didn't hear what punk, maybe. I don't even know what punk is, but it's Fast Ass Bluegrass. It's right up my alley. I'm super excited to see these guys. For the first time in person, they probably have a sense of humor too. High Energy Bluegrass Band with a punk rock edge from Los Angeles.
Speaker 1 00:36:32 We play festival shows, private events and freeway off ramps in Southern California and beyond. They're on my list. I've got them highlighted, starred, and circled on my notes. So beat it as you may. Okay, 6 30, 7 o'clock. We're still in the McKenzie stage. 6 37 o'clock still house junkies, fiddle guitar, bass trio, pep pee, fun, wicked fiddle solo. I came across. They definitely have their feet or a foot in the progressive side of things. Could be a lot of fun. All right, Stratus Rooftop at the caption Hotel from six 10 to six 50 Wood Box heroes. We talked about them already. Very stoked to see them. Six 40 to seven 20. This is the only time Ralph Stanley, the second, and Clinch Mountain Boys are playing during the ramble. They're the only ramble band that doesn't play twice. So I've never seen Ralph Staffing Lee second, I'm going to assume that they're traditional bluegrass.
Speaker 1 00:37:37 But you know what happens when you assume, and you also know that Earl Scruggs at one point had electric bass and drums and his backing band. So don't assume anything, but this is your only shot to see Ralph Stanley, at least during the ramble. Ralph Stanley ii, I apologize. Duplicate, duplicate, duplicate, duplicate. That's it. We've covered all the bands at the ramble. As I mentioned earlier, $60 or $59 and change for a two night ticket. What better way to experience If you're bluegrass curious, this is a perfect event. If you're a bluegrass junkie like myself, that's full on snorts it, this is the perfect event. This is the highlight of the IBMA. For me, I'm more excited about it than anything else. But you know what, it's just scratching the surface. If you're a bluegrass lover, you know all about IBMA. It's the award ceremony, it's the trade show, it's the festival at the end.
Speaker 1 00:38:37 It's the picking, it's the jamming, it's the unscheduled stuff. It's six days of nothing but bluegrass. Six days, six nights, 24 hours a day. IBMA is my happy place. It's the funnest week of the year. But the ramble is the highlight of I IBM MA. Go to ibm a.org, buy your tickets, go to haws, aggressive bluegrass. Play with the scheduling tool, download it, upload it to your calendar. Check out all the podcasts, check out all the videos, and come check out the IBMA Bluegrass Ramble. Thanks so much for tuning in, really appreciate it. And now, if you don't mind, please stick around for a brief message from our sponsors. Thanks again.
